Webster Jr. High holding basketball camp

Despite the school year being over, the sounds of basketballs bouncing are filling the gym at Webster Junior High as the school hosts its second annual basketball camp.

The camp began on Tuesday and will run through Friday.

The camp, serving students from ages 8-14, runs from 8 a.m. until noon, focuses on basic fundamental skills of basketball, character and sportsmanship.

The camp is run by a group of volunteer coaches, headed up by Webster Head Coach Milford Parker.

Joining Parker are, Christopher Reed, Zelda Thompson, Christina Chester, Wykeia Sanders and LaTanjorea Smith.

"All these coaches are out here on their own time," Parker said. "They aren't getting paid, they are just volunteering their time."

Paul Marshall, a former outstanding player for ULM and spent one season at LSU, will be speaking to the camp attendants in an effort to motivate them to give their best in whatever they choose to do.

Also, Jeremiah Williams, head coach at Bossier High School, will be a guest speaker at the camp on Friday.

"We have between 50 and 60 kids out for the camp," Parker said. "It's good for the kids to have something to do with school out, something structured where they can learn something."

The cost of the camp is kept to a minimum, $20 per student, due to the support of local businesses.

"We couldn't keep the cost so low, if not for our sponsors," Parker said. "Everything they've done for us is greatly appreciated."

The business sponsors for this year's camp are: Complete Air Solutions, LLC, Minden Athletic Supply, Harris Corner, LLC, Coca Cola Bottling, Ol' West Barbecue, State Farm-Jeannie Martin, AD Sign Service, Anti Pest Veitch, Poland's Tax Services, Quality Auto Detailing and Car Wash, Andre Grigsby-Concrete Mechanic, Easley Mainstreet Photography, Almar Properties and Wal-Mart.
