Alleged weed smoker burned

Donal_Ray_GillinsA traffic stop by Minden Police led to the arrest of local man on drug charges.

Donald Ray Gillins, 30, of the 600 block of Stone Street, was arrested for felony possession of CDS Sch. I (marijuana) and cited when an officer stopped his vehicle for a license plate light.

Minden Police Chief Steve Cropper said Ofc. Danny Turner stopped Gillins' vehicle around 7 p.m. Friday, November 9, after following the vehicle from Sheppard Street to Lee Street.

"The stop was in reference to a real bright light on a license plate," Cropper said. "The light was so bright, the officer couldn't read the plate number."

When asked for his driver's license, Gillins reportedly acted "nervous" toward the officer.

"Gillins was shaking while he was talking, so Off. Turner asked him if he had anything illegal inside the vehicle," said the chief. "Gillins gave the officer consent to search the vehicle and, once inside the vehicle, the officer could smell a strong odor of what he believed to be burning marijuana."

Turner reportedly checked under the front seat of the vehicle and discovered a small box containing one marijuana blunt.

"Also under the front seat were two small bags of synthetic marijuana," Cropper said.

Gillins was advised of his rights and taken to the Minden Police Department where he was booked and transferred to Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center.

"Mr. Gillins had a previous charge of possession of marijuana, making this charge a felony offense," Cropper said.
