Guess who's coming to dinner

101xx11cMinden's Fasching Fifth Season will be host to German cuisine under the direction of Chef Gunter Kilian of Diamond Jacks Casino.

The second annual Fasching Brunch will be held on Sunday, November 11, at the Minden Civic Center.

Chef Gunter was born in the Black Forest of Germany and has traveled the world gaining international experience for his culinary skills. He has catered for French and U.S. Presidents, film stars and professional athletes as well as serving as executive chef at world class restaurants throughout the world. He will be on hand at the brunch serving his famous strudel.

"My first dream was to immigrate to USA as a very young boy, as I had several relatives in the U.S.," Kilian said. "Then, at age 12 I met my uncle from Doylestown, Pennsylvania who owned a restaurant there, and he really made me excited about going to U.S. and working for him.

"However, my mother said, I have to learn a trade first before she lets me go, and that's how I decided at the age of 14 to learn the trade of cooking with a three-year contract in the famous Bath town Baden Baden," he continued. "Unfortunately, during that time my uncle passed away. But my dream to go to USA never died."

After working the next 10 years in several first class restaurants in Germany and two luxury cruise ships around the world, Kilian made his journey to the U.S.

Joining Kilian at Fasching Brunch as a sponsor and caterer is Lisa Ellen, of Lisa Ellen's Cakes and Catering.

"They will be serving up a delicious brunch the whole family can enjoy, including brats (bratwurst) and other surprises," brunch chairman Catherine Hunt said. "Lisa Ellen is known area-wide for her great food and culinary skills."

Along with Lisa Ellen's Cakes and Catering, Habacu's Mexican Restaurant is also supporting the brunch as a Platinum Sponsor.

"Since America is a melting pot of different cultures, we wanted to help promote the German culture and heritage in Minden," Habacu said. "We are so proud to be a part of the Minden community and appreciate all the support we have received (as we opened our business)."

"Habacu's will also have numerous door prizes that will be handed out at the brunch," Hunt said. "This will be a feast – a really great event, that you dont want to miss out on."

November 11 marks the official beginning of the Fasching Fifth Season (Mardi Gras). In German tradition, the King and Queen of Fasching are given the keys to the city to reign over festivities from that day until midnight on Fat Tuesday, February 21.

Minden Mayor Bill Robertson will present keys to this year's Krewe des Ambassadeur Royalty, King Shelby Duay and Queen Kathy Camp.

"Families can come and go as their church schedule allows," said Hunt. "Come and enjoy brunch, meet the Mardi Gras Royalty and then stay and enjoy entertainment, arts, crafts, historic tours and great fun on Main Street all Sunday."

Krewe des Ambassadeurs will be the official hosts and will serve brunch from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Other krewe members from throughout the area will also be on hand to help celebrate the official beginning of Fasching, handing out Mardi Gras beads as well.

Advanced tickets are on sale now at the Minden Main Street Office at city hall and City Art Works, 701 Main Street. The tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12, tables are available for $125 each.

Fasching weekend kicks off with the "Grand Illumination" of the Christmas lights in Minden Friday night, along with an art crawl from Easley Art to City Art Works. The celebration continues Saturday morning with activities including a bike ride to Germantown, Germantown bus tours, tours of the Dorcheat Museum, German food, music, beer garden, carnival, clowns, petting zoo and arts and crafts and will conclude with a giant fireworks demonstration at 6:30 p.m. Sunday's activities will begin with the Fasching Brunch and conclude at dusk.
