Sec. of Wildlife and Fisheries to speak at chamber banquet

The 59th Annual Springhill-North Webster Chamber of Commerce Banquet is scheduled for Thursday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Springhill Civic Center, 101 Machen Drive in Springhill.

Featured speaker and honored guest will be Secretary of Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Robert Barham.

Barham, a life-long resident of Oak Ridge, served as a State Senator for Louisiana's 33rd District from 1994 to 2008.

In the Senate, he served as chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, and was a member of the Senate Agriculture & Forestry Committee and the Senate Natural Resources Committee.

Barham previously served as chairman of the Senate Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Committee for eight years.

Barham's public service began when he was elected mayor of the town of Oak Ridge in 1982. He served in that capacity until 1988.

Barham formerly served in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1972, serving a combat tour in Vietnam. From 1973 through 1994,

Barham supervised family farming operations in northeast Louisiana that included corn, cotton, rice and soybean production, as well as timber production and raising cattle.

He and his wife, Melba, have three children: Robert, a teacher at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill; Rebecca, an attorney in Shreveport; and Henry, a physician in Denver, Co.

Secretary Barham's many honors include: Louisiana Wildlife Federation's Outstanding Legislator of the Year Award – 1999, Daughters of the American Revolution National Award for Conservation of Natural Resources – 1999, Louisiana Ag Council's Outstanding Individual in Agriculture Award – 2000, New Orleans Chamber of Commerce Legislator of the Year Award – 2002, Inductee into the LSU Alumni Hall of Distinction – 2007 and CCA-Louisiana "Jerry Stone" Conservationist of the Year Award – 2008.

Individual reservations are $35 each and will include a choice of either ribeye steak or grilled chicken catered by Little Frenchie's Fixins.
