This past weekend the Minden team traveled to New Orleans for the Louisiana State Tournament.
The Minden boys lost both of their games, but played well, with one of their losses coming to the eventual State Champions, Retif Oil.
There were a few calls that went against the Minden team, prompting head coach Kirby Moore to say, "We got a real taste of home cooking, but I didn't know we were going to be the main course."
In their first game, Minden jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on Retif Oil, but eventually fell, 10-3.
In the top of the first Caleb Moore singled to right field, and then Tyler Wallace doubled down the left field line, advancing Moore to third. Moore then scored on Bo Parker's sacrifice fly. Reco Mitchell followed with a single to center, which drove in Wallace to give Minden the 2-0 lead.
Retif Oil scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-2 lead.
Minden fought back for another run in the second to cut the lead to 5-3. Moore worked a two-out walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Wallace followed with a single to center, scoring Moore. Retif would come back and score five more runs to make the lead 10-3, and that would be the eventual final score.
Mitchell and Wallace each led the team with two hits and a RBI, and Moore added two hits. Parker singled and drove in a run and Cody Davis and Dewy Kendrick both added base hits. Boyd took the loss on the mound.
In the second game, Minden fell to the Eunice Oilers, 7-3. Minden trailed 3-0 until the bottom of the third when they scratched out a run. With one out, Wallace reached on a throwing error by the pitcher. Wallace advanced to second on a wild pitch, and two batters later scored on a Davis single to center.
Minden then tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. JaVonte Thomas led off the inning by reaching on an error by the Eunice shortstop. Thomas advanced to second on a wild pitch and Cody Boyd walked. Moore then laid down a sac bunt moving the runners to second and third. Wallace then grounded out to second base, driving in Thomas. Lucious Creech then singled to right field, scoring Boyd.
Eunice would go on two score a pair of runs in each of the fifth and seventh innings to take the 7-3 win. Davis and Creech both singled and drove in a run to lead the team. Matt Warren added a base hit and Wallace had an RBI. Thomas went 5 2/3 innings on the mound for Minden and took the loss.
