Local youth looks for support

Gerding headed to USKA World Championships

Fourteen year-old Will Gerding has been studying martial arts under Sensei Toby Sinclair since 2009 and has earned an advanced Brown Belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Since beginning his training, Gerding has participated in twenty tournaments, earning 1st place titles in multiple categories and earned the title of Texas State, Oklahoma State and Louisiana State Champions. He also recently won the Quadruple Crown at the 2011 USKA (United States Karate Alliance) National Tournament.

As the current national champion, Gerding's next step is to compete at the 2011 USKA World Championships in Dallas, TX on July 21 through the 24th. Gerding would be competing with champions from all over the world.

"I am excited to compete at such a level," Gerding said. "This is the last major tournament for 2011 and I would greatly appreciate any help for the chance to attend."

The cost for the four-day event is approximately $800 per person. Gerding has been working to earn money for his trip and has raised $215 so far. He is now hoping for an assist from the community to get him to Dallas and the USKA Tournament.

"Minden has a great reputation for supporting the community and youth," Gerding said. "I would be most grateful for any amount you wish to donate."

If you wish to help Gerding, send contributions to Robert Gerding (memo "Will Gerding Tae Kwon Do Fund") 307 Lakeshore Drive, Minden, La. 71055.
