One dies in wreck

‘Jaws of Life’ used to extract accident victim

A Haughton woman lost her life in a motor vehicle accident with an 18-wheeler Tuesday.

Lisa Thorne, 47, of the 4800 block of Belleview Road, died after her vehicle was struck by an 18-wheeler at the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 80 and La. Hwy. 531 around 3 p.m.
Minden Police Chief Steve Cropper said witnesses reported Thorne was traveling eastbound on Hwy. 80.

“She was attempting to make a northbound, left-hand turn,” Cropper said. “The 18-wheeler was traveling southbound. According to all the witnesses, Thorne’s vehicle entered the intersection under a redlight and the 18-wheeler broadsided her in the driver’s door.”

Cropper said both vehicles were traveling under the speed limit.

“She was going about 25, and the 18-wheeler was going about 45,” Cropper said. “She pulled right out in front of the 18-wheeler, and there wasn’t a lot he could do.”

Minden Fire Chief Kip Mourad said Thorne was still alive when the Rescue Squad extracted her from the vehicle, using the “Jaws of Life.” She reportedly died after being transported by LifeAir to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport.

Mourad said it took his crews about five minutes to get Thorne out of the vehicle and 30 minutes to put an absorbent for motor oil and fluids on the highway and finish clean-up work.

According to reports, the driver of the 18-wheeler had minor injuries.

Thorne was reportedly talking to her boyfriend on her cell phone at the time,  although Cropper said there is no proof that a distraction caused the accident.
