Fourth events are booming

dorseyEntertainment abounds this Fourth of July weekend, and the Webster Parish Convention and Visitors Bureau is hoping for some explosive numbers.

"We have so much to offer in Webster Parish, from our lakes and bayous to our entertainment," said Lynn Dorsey, Executive Director of WPCVB. "We are hoping all of these things will bring in visitors this holiday weekend."

God and Country

The 10th Anniversary God and Country Celebration Concert brought to you by the Minden Community Chorus will be held on Friday at the Minden Civic Center.

The evening begins with an indoor picnic and table decorations contest at 6 p.m., followed by the patriotic concert at 7 p.m.

"This is their 10th year and it is truly a tradition for the Minden community," said Dorsey. "It is an outstanding and very professionally-done concert. I think Minden is extremely fortunate to have a production of this quality for its citizens each year."

Tickets in advance are $10 for ages 12 and up and $5 for ages 6-11. Tickets at the door are $12 for ages 12 and up and $7 for ages 6-11.

Bistineau Boat Parade

On Saturday, the Lake Bistineau Independence Celebration Boat Parade and Contest will be held at noon with registration beginning at 11 a.m. All boats are invited to participate and will be decorated in red, white and blue to compete for cash prizes.

Patrons and participants will be able to launch a boat and see the parade from Rogers Marina. The boats will finish the parade and cash prizes will be awarded at Our Place, followed by live music and barbecue.

Blues Festival

On Sunday, a new event will be held in Minden at the Farm. The Blues and Old School Festival, sponsored by Penal Farm Road Entertainment, will be held 1 p.m.

This great musical event will feature a lineup of live entertainers including "Hollywood Haynes," former member of the Marvin Sease Band), Derek Rick, RNB Sensation Lewis AKA Mr. Freaky, Angela Wills, Ceasar Calloway, John Bryan, the Primetime Band and more.

Admission is $10 and patrons are asked to bring lawn chairs. For more information, call Sugar Bear at 205-7517.

Veterans Ceremony

A special ceremony will be held at 4:30 p.m. July 4 at the Veterans' Flag Memorial on Turner's Pond.

Veterans who would like a patriotic lanyard may get one at no cost by calling First Baptist Church, 377-4434 to reserve one.


Annual fireworks at Turner's Pond on July 4 will be held, beginning around 8:45 p.m. They are sponsored by George Fithen and Ron Hathorn

Germantown Colony

The Germantown Colony Museum will be open for those looking to add a little history lesson into their weekend. Established in 1835, the colony operated on a communal basis for 37 years, finally dispersing in 1871.

The Germantown Colony and Museum is located 7 miles northeast of Minden on Germantown Road. It is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. For information, call 377-6061.

Dorcheat Museum

For more history check out the Dorcheat Museum located at 116 Pearl Street in historic downtown Minden. Here you can see artifacts from the parish's earliest inhabitants and hear about their triumphs and tragedies.

The museum is open Tuesday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. Admission is free. Call 377-3002 for more information.

Parks and recreation

Lake Bistineau State Park is 15 minutes south of Minden and dates back almost 200 years. Besides fishing, the lake is used for duck hunting, swimming, pleasure boating and waterskiing.

Bistineau offers modern cabins, boat rentals, playgrounds, two swimming pools, hiking and horse trails and group meeting facilities. For information or reservations call 1-877-CAMP-N-LA or go to www.lastateparks.com.

Caney Lakes, located just 10 minutes north of Minden, provides more than 350 acres of water recreation, hiking trails and camping facilities. Entry fees are $3 per vehicle or Camping for $10 per night. Call 927-2061 for more information.


After a peaceful morning on the beautiful waterways, have a thrilling night at Champion Park Speedway located on I-20 at the Goodwill Road exit, open Friday and Saturday nights. Call 371-0077 for the racing schedule.

Dorsey wants to remind people they can save gas and money by staying local and encourages locals to bring friends and family to the events and places Webster Parish has to offer.
