BATON ROUGE — Lakeside's Enrique Soto closed out his high school indoor track career the way he started as a freshman, with a state championship.

Soto repeated as the Division 2 1600 meter champ running a new record time of 4:25.72 to break the mark of 4:27.29 which he set last year. Soto used a final 64 second last 400 to defeat runner-up Jacob Chicola of Buckeye who finished at 4:29.27.

Soto won the 3200 as a freshman, was a runner-up in the 3200 as a sophomore, and won titles in the 1600 his junior and senior seasons, making him a 4-time indoor Division II All-Stater.

For the second year in a row Chris Lewis finished as state runner-up in the Division 2 55 meter dash. Lewis and Jeryl Brazil of Loranger renewed their sprint duel with Brazil edging Lewis at 6.27 to 6.30. Lewis' personal best time ranks as the fourth in the nation, and Brazil's is number 1. Lewis reached the final by winning his preliminary race at 6.49.

Two other Lakeside athletes participated in the state meet. Alisa Lander finished seventh in the 1600 at 6:05 despite battling a severe upper respiratory illness. Seventh grader Brooke Walker finished 10th in the 3200 at 15:19.

The Lakeside track teams begin their 2013 outdoor season on Thursday, Febuary 28th at the Benton Relays.

The teams are coached by Dan Grantham and David Kidd.
