Children are invited to sing their hearts out during tryouts for the newest choir in the area.
Harvest Children's Choir will hold auditions at Zenobia's House, located on The Farm of Cultural Crossroads, at the corner of Talton and Union Streets, across from Save-A-Lot, on Saturday, January 19 from 1 until 5 p.m.
"Other than church choirs, there is not a community choir in Minden for children," said Leslie Coyle, who is the choir director and Cultural Crossroad member. "I thought that with the Farm being about promoting the arts, it would be the perfect place for a children's community choir. It is just a natural progression of The Farm's mission."
Coyle's experience and love of music enables her to start this new program.
"Music is something that I'm good at," Coyle said. "If there are kids in the community who have as much interest in music as I did growing up, then this is something we need to do to peek their interest and have a really good time as well."
Coyle performed with Texas Girl's Choir from the ages of eight to nine, and with Louisiana All-State Youth Choir from the ages of 14 until 17. She is multi-instrumental, playing the guitar, piano and drums.
"Music has been on of my main focuses, my passion, since I was young, " she said. "I hope that there are children across the community who will take advantage of this new choir."
The choir is open to all children in third to sixth grade in Webster Parish. Twelve boys and 12 girls will be selected to form the choir.
No cost is expected to be involved for the children who participate in Harvest Children's Choir.
"Any funds we need, we will raise," Coyle said. "We may do a tie-dyed shirt as a uniform, for them to wear at performances. Other than that, they would just need to come to practice, usually on Saturdays, ready to sing and have a good time."
Coyle hopes there is enough interest and the choir can perform at Cultural Crossroad's Spring Arts Festival this spring, and other events in the area.
Students should be prepared to sing acappella two songs: "My Country 'Tis of Thee" and a song of their choice.
