The Minden High Lady Tiders led early but couldn't hold off Loyola Prep, as the Lady Flyers fought back for a late 43-42 win over Minden.
The Lady Tider held a one-point lead with less than a minute to play and were at the line with a one-and-one situation. But a missed free throw and a turnover led to their defeat.
"We had an unfortunate situation at the end," Lady Tider head coach Jacob Brown said. "When we missed the free throw, we got the rebound. But instead of kicking the ball back out, we turned the ball over. Loyola went down and scored. We got the ball back with 15 seconds left, but Loyola did a good job defensively, and we didn't score."
The Lady Tiders trailed 12-9 at the end of the first quarter but fought back to tie the game at 22-22 at the half.
"I thought we came out sluggish and slow in the first quarter," Brown said. "We were just not very intuned to what was going on. They jumped out 8-2 on us, but we went on a 7-0 run to take a 9-8 lead. It was really a game of runs early. In the second quarter, we went on an 11-0 run to go up 20-14, but they came back with another 8-2 run to tie at the half."
The Lady Flyers out-scored the Lady Tiders, 13-11, in the third quarter and Minden took the fourth, 9-8.
"We didn't do a very good job of taking care of the basketball in the first half," Brown said. "Which led to a lot of easy baskets for them. We played much better in the second half. We continued to fight, scratch and claw and do good things defensively. But offensively we're still looking for somebody to make a play."
Carmella Specks led the Lady Tiders with 24 points and four rebounds. Shabrie Nelson added nine points and three rebounds, and Antavious Sterling grabbed six rebounds and scored four points. Tyia Green had three points and Metosha Gill had two points and four steals.
"We're playing pretty well," Brown said. "We're right there and hopefully we'll learn from this game. We're going to get back to work and stay positive."
The Lady Tiders are now 4-2 on the year.
