Minden High tops Lakeside, 79-59

Crimson Tide’s depth proves to be the difference

It was another typical Minden High, Lakeside basketball game.

It was hard fought, high intensity and it came down to the end.

After three quarters of very close basketball, the Minden Crimson Tide used their depth to out-score the Warriors, 28-13, in the fourth quarter to take a 79-59 win over their parish rivals.

"First I want to give Lakeside a lot of credit," Tide head coach Alan Shaw said. "I thought they played well last night, especially in the first half and right through the third quarter. They shot the ball extremely well and came out with a lot of intensity. They executed their plan real well like all of coach Gould's teams do. I was impressed with them and I was not impressed with us."

Shaw was unhappy with the way his team played early.

"I thought we were really flat," he said. "I thought we played very unemotional in the first half and we didn't execute offensively or defensively. We did a terrible job on the boards and gave them a number of second and third shots in the first half."

On the flip side, Lakeside head coach Jason Gould was pleased with his team's play early in the game.

"I thought we started off pretty well," he said. "We had a good game plan and the kids were executing. We led 13-12 after the first quarter and after they took the second quarter, 18-17, we went into the half tied at 30-30. I thought were playing pretty decent."

Minden out-scored Lakeside 21-16 in the third quarter, and in the fouth, the Tide's depth played a key role.

"They just wore us down in the fourth quarter," Gould said. "We didn't play very well after we got tired, and so they pulled away from us. It seemed like whatever could go wrong, did go wrong."

The Tide defense set the tone late in the game.

"I think we picked up our defensive intensity in the second half," Shaw said. "And I think our depth really hurt them.. We were able to play a lot of people and by the fourth quarter we really wore them out."

C.J. Elkins led Minden with 18 points and Anfernee Redd scored 14. Dominique Walker had 11 and Tra Thornton added nine. Elgin Moore and Reggie Seamster each scored six.

Lance Williams led the Warriors with 14 points and Jamarion Teal added 13 points and nine rebounds. Darryl Moore scored 11 and Deandre Shehee had 10 with two three-pointers.

"The game was still a positive for us," Gould said. "Because we did go out and play well for a while. Now we need to work on maintaining that and keep improving."

All in all, Shaw was happy with his team.

"We came back and played hard and that was goood," he said. "Hopefully with our depth, we can wear down a lot of people this year. It was a tough win, but any win over Lakeside us a good one. It's certainly a big rivalry and it's always going to be close."

Both teams will play in the Haughton Tournament today. Minden will play Green Oaks at 4 p.m. and Lakeside will play North DeSoto at 5:25 p.m.
