Stroller hobbled

Man with drugs walks away from officer

Trying to look nonchalant backfired on a Minden man who was arrested this week for possession of prescription drugs that weren't prescribed to him.

Gary Mathew Bowman, 21, of the 700 block of Gladney Street is charged with illegal possession of CDS Sch. II (Methadone) without a prescription.

Minden Police Chief Steve Cropper said Bowman was seen walking on Goode Avenue Monday by Ofc. James Barnes.

"Officer Barnes was patrolling, and as his car came closer, Bowman began walking in the opposite direction, as if to avoid the police," Cropper said. "That made Barnes suspicious."

When Bowman was stopped, the officer reportedly asked if he had anything illegal in his pockets.

"Bowman said 'no,' and the officer asked him to empty his pockets on the hood of the patrol car," Cropper said. "Bowman reached in his pocket and pulled out three white pills and threw them down in front of the patrol car."

At that point, Barnes arrested Bowman and contacted narcotics agent Lt. Dan Weaver to identify the pills.

"Weaver came to the scene and identified the pills as Methadone 10, which is illegal unless you have a prescription," said the chief.

Bowman was booked at the Minden Police Department and transported to Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center.
