Fulfill Scripture

"Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill." Matthew 5:17 NASB

All Scripture was important to Jesus. To the Jewish people, the phrase "the Law and the Prophets" meant the entirety of Scripture. Today we would say "the Bible" to refer to all of Scripture. The word "abolish" means to shake or loosen until the object falls apart and is no longer valid. Jesus did not come to do away with Scripture or the Old Testament. Instead, He came to fulfill Scripture. The word "fulfill" means affirming its original intent, clarifying fully its original meaning, and completing its original purpose. Jesus knew the reason He came and that reason was to do all the Scripture commanded.

Lord Jesus, I am amazed how the whole Bible teaches about You and Your truth. Help me to learn from Scripture and to obey its commands.
