Glenbrook advances to Elite Eight

MARKS, MS. — The Glenbrook Apaches reached the Elite Eight of the A State Tournament with a 69-48 win over DeSoto Wednesday night.

Tonight, Glenbrook will face the Winona Stars with a trip to Friday's A Final Four on the line.

"We came out tonight and did what we needed to do early," Glenbrook head coach Chris Kourvelas said. "We kept our composure throughout the game, although at times it got a bit physical, we made good shot selection and we pushed the ball after turnovers or defensive boards. We played very good solid defense and got the the boards on both sides of the floor."

The Apaches jumped out to a 24-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and then out-scored DeSoto, 17-6 in the second to take a 41-17 halftime lead. Glenbrook kept it up in the third quarter, doubling DeSoto's point total, 20-10 and then coasted in the final quarter to take the win.

Terez "Mookie" Mack led the Apaches with 19 points, nine rebounds and seven steals. Cade Spurlock added 14 points and Caydan Maloney added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Zach Specht dropped in eight points and five rebounds and Wesley Hicks added six points and 10 rebounds. Austin Palmier had six points, Jacob White had three and Cory Walker turned in three blocks and two steals.

"Mookie had a good night and was close to a triple-double, Zach Specht got some good rebounds, and Caydan Maloney had a great night rebounding and getting a lot of put backs," Kourvelas said. "Wesley Hicks rebounded well and Cade Spurlock had a really good game by getting to the basket and making his shots. Cory Walker had three big blocks for us as well. Although we struggled a bit with our free throws and we turned the ball over more than what I'd like for us to do (15), we still came out with a big win. We are very happy to advance to the next round."

The Apaches will play Winona tonight at 7:45 p.m. at Delta Academy in Marks, MS.

"One of our assistants, Coach Hill was able to catch Winona this afternoon when they played Park Place," Kourvelas said. "We know that Winona has a couple of shooters who can hit a lot of three's and they also have some guys that are really good at finishing around the basket, especially with second chances. We are taking this one game at a time up here in Marks. We, well, I feel a bit of weight off of our shoulders being that we finished the first game on top. I think this has given us confidence to know that we can play far away from home and still come out on top."
