Glenbrook takes first round win

HOMER — The Glenbrook Apaches took a first round win in the South State Tournament being held at Claiborne Academy this week.

The Apaches rolled past Amite School, 57-14

"We jumped out on Amite early and we did not look back," Glenbrook head coach Chris Kourvelas said. "That's one thing we wanted to do tonight was to get off to an early, commanding lead and we accomplished that."

The Apaches started fast, taking a 21-2 first quarter lead and never looked back.

Zach Specht turned in a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds and Cade Spurlock led the team with 20 points. Wesley Hicks grabbed 10 rebounds and scored four points and Terez "Mookie" Mack had seven points, five rebounds, five assists and six steals.

"Specht turned in a double-double, Cade shot very well and Wesley rebounded well," Kourvelas said. "Mookie played superb defense and made the defense guard him, which created open shots for others, and all of our other players contributed either on the boards or with knocking down good shots."

The Apaches will now move on to play Claiborne Academy in the semi-finals of South State Friday night at Claiborne.

"I stayed and watched the match up between Tallulah and Claiborne to see who we would face Friday," Kourvelas said. "Claiborne pulled that game out (which actually was a pretty close game). However, our focus is now on Claiborne."

Kourvelas and his team are very familiar with the Rebels.

"We know they are a good, solid team," he said. "They are very, very well coached and I know that Coach Wade Heigle is putting his guys through a tough, physical and demanding practice to prepare for us. Earlier in the season, we were able to pull out two wins against them. But like I said, now everyone's record is erased. Both teams are now 1-0. It is very difficult to beat a team three times in a season, much less when that team is hosting the South State Tournament on their home court. Over the next couple of days, we will be preparing as much as we can for Claiborne. We will need a good fan support from our Glenbrook faithful on Friday night."

Game time is 7:15 p.m.
