SIBLEY — The Lakeside wrestling team has had a great first year, and now will try to cap the season with a run in the State Tournament this weekend at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.
"This season has been great," Lakeside head coach Darrick Roberson. "As a first year team we were behind the learning curve all season. This group of guys have grabbed the bull by the horns and taken on the challenge."
Roberson said his team has made a lot of progress since their inception back in October.
"They've grown from high kids thinking wrestling is just like the UFC or MMA to young men on a mission," Roberson said.
Nine Lakeside wrestlers will take part in the state meet.
Cody Simpson will compete at 106 pounds and Jeremy Smith will be at 113. Cameron Corley will wrestle at 132, Thomas Lambert at 145 and Chandler Jones will be at 160. Cody Poe (170), Roy Doyle (182), Mason Powell (195) and Luke Griffith will wrestle at the heavier weights for the Warriors.
Cameron Corley, Thomas Lambert, Mason Powell and Roy Doyle. have been the top wrestlers for the team this season.
Roberson said his team has had to deal with some ups and downs this year, and they never gave up.
"They've gone through disappointments, injuries and a host of other things," he said. "They persevered and found a way to win. The school and community have supported the team well. I must say this has been the best group of guys I've ever coached."
The state finals will be held Saturday night.
