George Benton Merritt, Sr.

Graveside services for George Benton Merritt, Sr. will be held today (Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011) at 2 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Minden. Officiating will be Chaplain Andrew Abshire. The family received friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden.

Benton was born August 12, 1932 in Evergreen and entered into rest Oct. 31, 2011 in Bossier City. Benton was a self-employed contract switcher working for various oil companies over the years. In his spare time he enjoyed farming, fishing, and hunting, although, his greatest love was his family. He and his wife, Sue, celebrated 60 years of marriage in July of this year. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and playing with his great-grandchildren.

His parents, Emister and Ima Merritt; sister, Eloise Nelson; and brother, Marvin "Buddy" Merritt preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Weaver Merritt; sons and daughters-in-law; George "Beatle" Merritt, Jr. and wife, Terri, Lane "Bimbo" Merritt and Syralja all of Cotton Valley and Bruce Merritt and Louise of Searcy, Arkansas; daughter and son-in-law; Teresa and John Grooms of Hortman; grandchildren, Jason, Joseph, Josh and Jacob Merritt, Heathe Merritt and Jenni Merritt Williams, Miranda Merritt Bogle, Collin and Grant Merritt, Julie Grooms Brown, Mike Grooms and Jana Grooms Tharpe; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Jean Holder of Homer; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons-in-law.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Yellow House of Highland, 410 Dalzell Street, Shreveport, Louisiana.
