Marie Nelson, born Nov. 12, 1919, as the first of six children born to Pauline Gaines and Henry Nelson, Jr. Her early years were spent living with her parents, attending school and playing with her sisters and brothers.

At an early age, Marie confessed Christ and joined St. James Baptist Church. Being a Christian and serving the Lord were important parts of her life. After moving to California, she united with Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in San Diego; her pastors were Reverend Lockridge and Reverend Smith. She enjoyed attending church services and working in the Missionary Society.

Marie was united in holy matrimony to John D. Moorey, and they were happily married until his death 38 years later.
Her second marriage was to Wilma Spikes, and they were a happy couple until his death, about 12 years later. In both marriages she was a devoted housewife, who especially enjoyed cooking, keeping her home attractive and entertaining family and friends.

Participating in Happy Hours, a social club, was one of her favorite pastimes. She loved living in California and as she grew older, she was blessed to have persons whom she referred to as her extended family, “spoil” her by looking out for her welfare, taking her places and catering to her wishes.

Having a desire to be near her family, Marie returned to Louisiana in 1998. Again she became a faithful member of St. James and was once honored with a plaque for being the oldest member of the church.

Marie was preceded in death by her husbands, John D. Moorey and Wilma Spikes; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Nelson Jr.; and a younger brother, Edmond Nelson.

On Oct. 22, 2011, a few weeks before her 92nd birthday, Marie peacefully departed this life. Loving memories of her will forever be etched in the hearts of her siblings, Mrs. Ruthie Clark, Mr. Walter Nelson, Dorothy Cosby and Georgia Cosby, all of Minden; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Flora Nelson, and Mrs. Ann Nelson, Minden; brother-in-law, Mr. June Cosby Jr.; stepdaughters, Jerry and Willese, San Diego, California; a special cousin, Mrs. Nellie Maddox, Indio, California; her devoted nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and extended family members.
