eBooks find home among the books

The Webster Parish Library has expanded its services. Now available to download from the library's website are eBooks, audio books, music and videos.

Requests for eBooks have been coming in to the library since the first of the year, according to Beverly Hammett, library director.

"A lot of people got eReaders for Christmas last year, so we have had numerous request every week since Christmas," she said.

Anyone with a valid library card and PIN can check out and download digital media anytime, anywhere by visiting www.websterparishlibrary.org and choosing "overdrive download."

Users may browse the collections by format like eBooks and audio books or choose featured selections like new additions, most popular or hidden gems.

To check out titles, users will need to install free software available on the website – OverDrive® Media Console™ for audio books, music, videos and/or Adobe® Digital Editions for eBooks.

Items can be downloaded to PC, Mac® and many mobile devices. Titles can be enjoyed immediately on computers, tablets, Apple and Android phones or transferred from computers to a variety of devices, including iPod®, Sony® Reader™, Barnes & Noble® Nook™ and many others. Titles should be available for the Amazon Kindle by the end of the year.

Checked out items will automatically expire at the end of the lending period. There are no late fees.

Angie Jackson, library administrative assistant, said, she is enjoying the ease of the library eBooks.

"Recently, while we waited for the LSU game to start, I downloaded two books for my six-year-old daughter," Jackson said. "She loved reading her library books on the laptop."

Written instructions on getting started, as well as a video guided tour, can be found on the website. For additional help, call 371-3080, ext. 26, or bring your mobile device to the main branch at 521 East & West Street, Minden.

Together, these libraries provide a beginning collection of more than 7,000 best-selling and classic titles supplied by Overdrive, a leading full-service digital distributor of eBooks, audio books, music and video.
