Twin City Knockers to benefit Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

BOSSIER CITY — The Twin City Knockers are hosting "Paint the Rink Pink" to increase support and awareness of Breast Cancer Research.

On September 10, 2011, Hot Wheels South Bossier will host "Paint the Rink Pink," the next bout in the Twin City Knockers 2011 roller derby season.

This bout will feature two teams made up of Ark-La-Tex women competing in the fastest growing women's sport in the nation. Tickets for this full contact, un-choreographed game are on sale now, both locally and online through the brownpapertickets.com . Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door, and children under 10 receive free admission with an adult.

Every Twin City Knockers home bout features support for a local charity, and this month the Knockers are supporting the Susan G. Komen Foundation Race for the Cure taking place on September 17.

The Knockers are also entering a Race for the Cure team to further support the Foundation and its good works.

"As a team playing a sport that is dedicated to promoting the empowerment and athleticism of women, it was natural that we'd want to support the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Many of our members' lives have been touched by breast cancer, and as an organization formed primarily of women we are excited for this opportunity to lend our support," said Desiree Davis, who skates for the Knockers under the moniker Dezzy DeckHer. Davis lost her grandmother, Glennie Parker, to breast cancer last year.

Roller derby has experienced a nation-wide explosion in the past few years and currently boasts 986 leagues in 36 countries.

Attendance during the Twin City Knockers' inaugural season has indicated that the Shreveport/Bossier City area is quickly falling in love with this aggressive, competitive sport. The league is constantly recruiting skaters, volunteers, referees, and of course, fans. More information about the Twin City Knockers can be found at www.twincityknockers.org or on Facebook.
