46th WHS reunion held in San Francisco

Just like the San Francisco Giants did a sweep in the World Series, so did the WHS Class of '66' SF Class Reunion! The only thing missing from this gala event was the horse drawn white carriage. Billy Smith, along with his wife LaVerne, and the San Francisco team were the host and hostesses with the most.

Thursday, October 25 - Meet & Greet

The class is still reminiscing on the delicious cuisine during the Meet & Greet Celebration on October 25 at Frisco Fried where they dined on San Francisco's version of Soul Food. Everyone caught up on what has happened in our lives since 1966 to the present. This included attending college, graduating, careers, marriages, divorces, remarrying, motherhood, fatherhood, grandparents, great grandparents, ups, downs, in out, but yet we claim VICTORY! . We are truly living life like it's golden!

Friday, October 26

On Friday morning, we were chartered to the Golden Gate Bridge. We proudly wore our Webster High School reunion t-shirts. Of course, they were white and blue. On lookers were amazed that this energetic group was celebrating their 46th anniversary at the age of 64! We represented very well. God has truly been good to us. We were proud to be united again and felt a sense of renewed spirit and Wolf Luv! We then made our way to the Cliff House where we enjoyed dining at its finest. We feasted on sourdough bread the San Francisco way, which is by far the best there is. There was an extensive main course menu that included scallops, salmon, crab cakes, tenderloin bar-b-que, fried soft shell crabs and chicken dishes, just to name a few. To reenergize, we took a tour up, up, up to Twin Peaks. Our mode of transportation up to the top was automotive in nature. Just to be clear, we did not walk! Once we reached the top, the view was breath taking. Let us mention however, that over time some of us have developed a fear of heights. We encouraged the faint at heart that they could do it! We did it. The class of "66" is a class of overcomers.

Saturday, October 27

Billy and LaVerne made morning rounds to greet everyone and personally deliver our reunion gift bags. Our memoirs were delivered in a black Giants tote bag and included a WHS t-shirt, a reunion program itinerary outlining our event, a personalized reunion book marker, the Webster High School Class of 1966 Year Book on DVD and a couple of San Francisco souvenirs.

A few early risers for breakfast had an opportunity to meet Elroy Allums in the hotel restaurant. This was perfect timing because he was leaving to catch a flight returning back home. Duty called and his services were needed in wake of hurricane Sandy. Thanks for coming Roy, and we hope that next time we have an opportunity to spend more time together.

We enjoyed a full day of shopping, touring the city, and just enjoying plain old uninterrupted rest.

Dinner & Dance

The Saturday night Dinner and Dance at the Holiday Inn Golden Gateway Hotel was a night we will all remember. The class was dressed in their evening attire and ate and danced the night away.

Ms. A. C. Brown, San Francisco Branch NAACP Branch President, presented the class with a letter of congratulations and welcome to the city.

Guest Speaker, Cora Allums Ledet, Class of 1967

Cora Allums Ledet, WHS Class of 1967, was the guest speaker. She shared her family's hardships and triumphs during the movement to abolish segregation in Minden and the state of Louisiana. Our class was seated on stage behind Cora and journeyed with her as she shared her family's history making moments. Cora's brother, and our class member of 1966, Elroy Allums, played a big part in this change. Elroy was the first black graduate in the 1966 class of Minden High School. Cora has written a book and it should be in publication relatively soon. We will make sure that this information is shared so we can support her by purchasing copies. We believe that this will hit the best sellers list!

Entertainment

Two bands entertained us throughout the night as they played oldies but goodies and also popular line dance music of today. You know everyone hurried to the floor and did the Electric Slide and To The Left, To The Left. One of the bands did music from the Temptations, O Jays and even Gladys Night and the Pips, including Bubba.

Billy Smith retires from the San Francisco Striders

We were honored to see our classmate, and host Billy Smith, pass the baton and retire from the San Francisco Striders. The San Francisco Striders was established in 1984 by Officer Smith (request from Chief Holder) to connect the Inner City youth and their families with the San Francisco Police Department. The SF Striders is a full service program providing support with media, life skills workshops; youth travel to cities, sites and national events. Congratulations to Billy and his wife Lavern for their unselfish dedication. Best wishes as you retire. Let's see how long retirement lasts.

Sunday, October 28

On Sunday morning, we worshipped at Providence Baptist Church at 1601 McKinnon Avenue in San Francisco. After church services, we released white and blue balloons in memoriam for our deceased class members. We had lunch at the Old Skool Café. This is a non-profit organization where the chefs are students from the Inner City area.

The class of "66" will present Billy and his wife LaVerne with a plaque and t-shirt quilt as a token of our appreciation for the kindness shown us during our reunion. You see, once we arrived in San Francisco, after providing for our lodging accommodations, all other reunion related expenses were no charge to us. The Smith's wanted to make this special for those that traveled to this event to share in this time of celebration. Special thanks also to Johnnie Lee Edwards and his wife Joyce for sharing in the transportation for our class. Joyce was also our on-site photographer. We will cherish this time, memories and celebration for a lifetime!
