A funeral celebrating the life of Jesus "Jay" Garcia, Jr. will be held Saturday, August 6, at 10 a.m. at Minden Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be Friday, August 5, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden.
Jay entered into eternal rest on Monday, August 1, after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Lansdale Garcia; his oldest son, James Ronald Garcia, killed in action in Viet Nam; and grandson, Seth Andrew Garcia, who died at birth.
Jay was born May 2, 1922 in Sherman, Texas and was a 1940 graduate of Sherman High School. A World War II veteran, he served first in the U.S. Army Air Corp then later in the U.S. Air Force, finishing his service at the rank of Captain.
Jay then began a career in pharmaceutical sales that lasted nearly 40 years. The last 34 years were with his beloved McNeil Laboratories, where he retired in 1990. Jay was known as "the Tylenol man" since he was responsible for marketing Tylenol in this area when this product was first released.
Jay then entered his final position as caregiver to his beloved wife, Dottie, who was a stroke patient. For 17 years he cared for Dottie until her death in 2008. He was active in Boy Scouts and the American Legion, holding many positions within the local chapter.
Jay is survived by four childre, Phillip Garcia and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Garcia, of Tampa, Florida, Suzan Garcia Wells and her husband, Joel Wells, of Fort Bragg, California, J. Garcia and his wife, Sue, of Shreveport and Joel Garcia and his wife, Elizabeth Garcia, of Minden. He has 10 grandchildren plus three great-grandchildren. His grandsons will serve as his pallbearers.
Jay enjoyed good health until he suffered a fall last September. The family would like to thank Dr. Carl Hines, Dr. Craig Miller and Dr. David Abdehou for their kind, attentive care. Also, they would like to thank Lucille Brown and Janice Allen for their service to Mr. Garcia as well as to the employees of Montclair Park Assisted Living.
