Miss Minden 2011 Chandler Nelson has been keeping busy around town.
Chandler's platform as she goes to Miss Louisiana in June is Autism Education. She has gone to Stewart and Richardson schools, (with plans to go to Harper and Jones) to read to the kids. Some of the books she has read are about children withautism.
Her goal is to teach kids that it is important to treat kids with autism (and other disabilites) with respect, and not to bully them or be unkind to them. She wants kids to understand that people with autism might act a little different from most, but that's ok.
Chandler's cousin, Weston, has autism, and thathas alowed her to see how hard it's been for him being bullied and mistreated by other kids who simply didn't understand that he had autism, and that he reacted to situations differently.
Weston is now 18, and will be graduating from high school.
Chandler also recently participated in the Young Women's Service Club's annual Easter egg hunt, held at the Farm on April 17. She helped with the face painting and signed some autographs.
She will soon have a fundraiser for Children's Miracle Network. As a contestant in the Miss America Organization, she is required to raise funds for the Children's Miracle Network, but Chandler hopes to raise more than what is required. . The money raised goes to local childrens' hospitals.
She also has a page for direct donations at https://missamericaforkids.org/m.aspx?i=2254464BCCA35+D35.
