An Example

"For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you" John 13:15. Just what is it we're supposed to do?

It was Jesus' last meal with His disciples. Even then, after more than three years with Jesus "there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest" Luke 22:24.

How His heart must have ached to realize the disciples' mindset, and at such a critical time.

The sad fact is that after nearly 2000 years the vast majority of those claiming Jesus' name are still striving for personal greatness.

"Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments" John 13:3, 4.

In coming to this earth, Jesus, with full knowledge of what He was doing, laid aside the prerogatives (His garment) of divinity. He condescended to accomplish our redemption giving us an example.

"Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

"And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross" Philippians 2:5-8.

Jesus laid aside His garment because He was about to perform the potentially dirty, smelly job of a servant.

This was His chosen method to turn the disciples' thoughts from selfish interests to eternal values.

He took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded" John 13:4, 5.

Can you imagine the humbling effect this had on those men?

It was upon completion of this amazing act of the Son of God that He said "If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you" John 13:14, 15.

There are plenty of feet that need washing. Are you ready to follow our Example and take up the task?
