Golfers to tee it up for charity

The Minden Charity Golf Classic tees off this weekend for the eighth year in a row. Minden Charity President Mike Harper said there are a record number of sponsors this year, which means more money to help those in need.

“We are very pleased with this year’s results – a record number of sponsors  – 112, and that’s where the bulk of the money comes from,” Harper said. “Friday night’s auction will usually comprise 15 to 20 percent of total revenue.”

Since its inception in 2004, the Minden Charity Golf Classic has distributed more than $205,000 to 140 families in need.

Harper believes the reason for the charity’s success is two-fold.

“Most recognize it to be for a very worthy cause and know that it is operated by 100 percent volunteers, allowing us to ‘net’ more than double the average charity golf event,” he said.  “It is one of the biggest and most fun golf tournaments in Minden – great food, drink, payout and entertainment.”

The goal of this nonprofit organization is to maintain a fund to provide charitable assistance, within the Minden area, primarily for those needs not specifically met by existing charities. Some examples would be assisting a family that has suffered a house  fire or assisting a family stricken with a devastating illness that creates a financial hardship.

MBL Bank is title sponsor of this event. Other sponsors are listed below.
