New instructor has right tools for the job

Northwest Louisiana Technical College welcomed Jerry Watkins as its new Machine Tool Technology instructor November 12.

Watkins takes the reins from Alan Myers, who has served as the program's interim instructor in recent weeks.

"Alan found time around his family business schedule to substitute for us for the past several weeks and has done a great job," said Charles Strong, regional director of Northwest Louisiana Technical College. "With his family business obligations requiring his return, we're fortunate to have Jerry Watkins to take over the program full time."

Watkins comes to the college with a variety of machine tool experience since 1985, including the United States Navy, Ruston Machine Works, WPS Industries, Franks Kitchen Systems and Bowen Manufacturing. He also currently instructs machine tool technology classes after hours at the Shreveport campus of Northwest Louisiana Technical College.

"Jerry's employment with us marks a great positive change for our program," said Strong. "We'll be able to offer the full gamut of machine tool training, with all its precision and technology, offered by an instructor with a great deal of industrial experience who also has instructional experience.

"Our move to our new state-of-the art 9500 Industrial Drive campus this spring provides a perfect springboard to jumpstart all our programs, including machine tool, to a new level of excellence," he continued. "We are very much in Alan Myers' debt for the excellent job he has done for us on an interim basis. His solid performance has been invaluable to us since he has been here, and we will always be grateful for his help to our college."

Applicants for machine tool technology training are currently being recruited by the college. NWLTC encourages those interested in high tech career training with strong employment potential to contact the college immediately for more information about machine tool technology or any of the college's other high skill, high demand instructional offerings. Visit their 814 Constable Street campus or call 371-3035 for additional information.
