SHREVEPORT—The North Webster Knights closed out their regular season with a wild 39-38 win over Booker T. Washington Friday night.
Next up for the Knights will be a first-round Class 2A playoff game at Kinder this Friday night.
The Knights stopped the Lions on fourth down from their 19-yard line with just five seconds left to seal the game.
"It was exciting to say the least," North Webster head coach John Ware said. "They were up on us 20-13 at the half, and that's one of the few times we've been down at halftime this year. But we came back in the third quarter and it was just crazy after that."
Early in the third quarter, the Knights faked a punt which set up a touchdown to cut the BTW lead to 20-19.
Freshman running back Devin White had an outstanding game as he rushed 19 times for 224 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback J.O. Smith added two more touchdowns and 146 yards.
"Devin had a real big night," Ware said. "He had a two 70-yard runs and a 90-yard run. He's turning into the player we all knew he would be. We've been putting the ball in his hands a little more lately. And J.O. played his usual consistent game and he had some big plays. He threw a big touchdown pass of more than 50 yards to Lyntavious Gipson in the first half. He's been real good for us all year."
The win improved the Knights to 6-4 overall and 3-2 in district.
"It was a real special win," Ware said. "These kids haven't had a winning season before, and it's been a real pleasure coaching them. It's been really fun for the school and the community for us to be doing so well."
The Knights will have another chance to impress their community as they head to Kinder for their first round playoff game. Ware was hoping to host a first round game, but it just didn't work out.
"We needed a few things to happen Friday night so we could have hosted," he said. "But those things didn't happen. We're seeded #17 and we need to be #16 to play at home. But we're still pleased to be in the playoffs."
