I would like to start today's article by welcoming the following businesses to our Chamber: 2 R Trucking & Dirt Work, Security Pro, Tiburon, and Volunteers for Youth Justice/CASA. We are pleased to have them and want to encourage all of our members to solicit these new businesses whenever you can. We are growing at 110 Sibley Road and would love to have you join us. Remember, our membership is not limited only to businesses. Individuals may also be Chamber members.
The CNG/LNG Fueling Workshop held at the Minden Civic Center was a tremendous success. Over 300 people attended the event. Vehicles were on display in the parking lot, local businesses had the opportunity to show their products at a mini-tradeshow in the lobby, and important information about CNG/LNG conversion was gleaned by all in attendance. We played host to companies and individuals from Baton Rouge, Houston, Dallas, Jackson and all points in between. I would like to thank our Administrative Assistant, Patricia Bennett, as well as the Chamber Board members who worked to make this event the largest such workshop that Chesapeake has ever had.
We were pleased to be a part of Minden Medical Center's new Outpatient Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy facility grand opening. We had a great turn out for the Ribbon Cutting and the After Hours event that followed. This new facility will make things so much easier for patients seeking physical and occupational therapy. Congratulations MMC for your continued growth and contributions to our business community.
Another project that I am very excited about is our Chamber Birthday Bash. Our Chamber was chartered October 1, 1942, with Mr. H. O. West serving as our very first Chairman of the Board. We are proud of our chamber and its contributions to the Minden-South Webster area. Seventy years is something to brag about! With that in mind, we are hosting a birthday party to celebrate this milestone. It will be held Thursday, October 11th, from 6:00-9:00. We will be including former board chairpersons in the program; asking them to share anecdotes and memories of their year of service. The party will be held at Orleans on Main with food, drinks, music, a slide show and of course a birthday cake!!! Cost for the event is $25 per person and $40 for a couple. We are pleased to announce that Town & Country Health & Rehab will be our title sponsor for the Birthday Party. Other sponsorship levels are available. If you are interested, please call Patricia at the Chamber for details. Come join us as we celebrate 70 years of service to the Minden-South Webster community!
Plans are being made for our Junior Leadership Webster Class of 2012-2013 chaired by Chamber Board member, Greg Lee. Greg and I have contacted area schools searching for participants who want to learn more about our community through the Leadership Webster program. Recommendations are made by school administrators and teachers. Students who qualify will apply, and we will be choosing about 30 young people to participate. Both of my children took part in this program when they were juniors in high school, and I can attest to its importance and value. The cost to participate is $150 for the 8-month program. Scholarships are available for those students who want to participate but may not have the tuition. We don't want to leave out any young person who sincerely wants to know more about Minden and Webster Parish. This is a national program whose significance has been well proven over the years.
The annual Farm City Prayer Breakfast is scheduled for Thursday, November 15, at the Minden Civic Center. The coffee will be ready at 6:00 a.m. with breakfast at 6:30 followed by the program at 7:00. The Chamber sponsors this event every year in cooperation with the Louisiana Egg Commission. Please mark your calendars and make plans to attend.
Preparations are already in the works for our annual Chamber Banquet to be held in February. Several Ribbon Cuttings are planned for the latter part of 2012. Grand Openings mean new businesses and economic growth for our area. We at the Chamber assert that growth in the form of new companies and jobs is our first priority. If you are not a Chamber member, or if you have let your membership lapse, please consider joining us as we continue to move forward. Seven decades is quite an accomplishment.
Come Home to Minden and be a part of the next seventy years!
Jerri de Pingre' is president of the Minden-South Webster Chamber of Commerce.
