Warriors to face Calvary in 2A semi-finals

SIBLEY — After beating Opelousas Catholic, 4-1, on Monday, the two most important numbers for the Lakeside Warriors are one and two.
One more win and the Warriors will play for the Class 2A State Championship.

And two more wins will bring that State Championship back to Sibley.

All this was made possible by an outstanding win at home over OCS Monday evening.

“It was a big day and a great game,” Lakeside coach Bob Gray said. “OCS got after it and played with emotion. Our guys had to put there heads down and play baseball, and that’s what they did.”

The Warriors used a two home run fourth inning, a fantastic start on the mound by Preston Gray and an efficient relief outing from Colby Sherrard to knock out the Vikings.

“Preston put us on his back in the middle innings,” Gray said. “That portion of the game makes or breaks you, and he made sure they never even sniffed trouble. He took care of us, and that’s the kind of performance you need in the finals.”

Opelousas started off the game with an infield single, but Preston Gray got the next three batters in order to end the inning.

In the bottom of the inning, Tyler Wallace led off with a double down the left field line. Austin Ashley then sacrificed him over to third, where he scored on a fielder’s choice by Garrett Lambert.

The score stayed 1-0 until the third when OCS tied it up with a RBI-double by Brandon Dupre.

In the top of the fourth, OCS threatened to take the lead, as they had a runner at third with one out. But Preston Gray got the next two batters to strike out and groundout to end the threat.

In the bottom of the inning, Preston Gray broke the tie with a solo home run over the left field fence. One out later, Koty Monday added his own home run, a laser shot to left.

Lakeside added another run in the bottom of the fifth, as Tre’ McDaniel reached on an infield single and then later came around to score to give the Warriors a 4-1 lead.

Dupre led off OCS’ sixth with a double to right center. After an out, Preston Gray walked Cody Arnaud to put runners on first and second. Coach Gray went out to talk to his senior pitcher and decided to leave him in the game. It was a wise decision, as Preston Gray coaxed a pop-up and a strike out to end the inning.

The Vikings would not quit and Miles Gates led off the top of the seventh with a single to right field. This time Gray did lift his pitcher, bringing in Colby Sherrard to close out the game. That’s exactly what he did, as he got a nice Wallace-to-Ashley-to-Monday 6-4-3 double play and then a groundout to third to end the game.

Lakeside’s bench emptied as the players dogpiled near the mound.

Preston Gray improved to 11-2 with the win as he went six innings, giving up four hits and two walks, while striking out four. Sherrard pitched a perfect seventh for the save.

Monday  had a single and a home run and Preston Gray homered. Wallace doubled and McDaniel had two singles. Lambert added an RBI.
Lakeside will now play district-foe Calvary Baptist in the Class 2A semi-finals Friday night a 7 p.m. at Fair Grounds Field in Shreveport. If the Warriors win that game, they will play for the 2A State Championship on Saturday.

“Big games create bigger games,” coach Gray said.
