Warriors to host meet on Wednesday

SIBLEY — Lakeside High School is now home to just the second wrestling program in the parish.

The Lakeside Warrior wrestling team has actively participated in meets since its inception in October.

"We have 26 kids out now," wrestling coach Darrick Roberson said. "Last year Doyline was the first school to bring wrestling to Webster Parish. And we are now the second."

Roberson has a wealth of experience in the wrestling realm as he claimed all-American honors in high school and college. A native of Delaware, Roberson entered the Air Force and was stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City.

While at Barksdale, Roberson began officiating high school wrestling matches. He soon began speaking to officials in Webster Parish and at Doyline High School. A short while later, Roberson was organizing Lakeside's first wrestling squad.

"Wrestling is good for kids to build self esteem and motivation," said Roberson, who serves in a non-faculty coaching capacity for Lakeside. "It teaches discipline and helps build character."

A unique aspect of wrestling, he said, was the fact it is a team sport but also an individual sport.

"When you get on the mat, it is just you and one other person," he said. "But your outcome affects the team score. It is great for team building."

The same as football, basketball and all other team sports, Lakeside competes in Class 2A of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association. Thus far, the team has competed in several meets including this past weekend at the Huntington Invitational.

Two weeks ago, the team took third place at the Eagle Open at Evangel Christian Academy in Shreveport.

Next up for the team is playing host during the inaugural Lakeside Warrior Invitational. The meet is set for Wednesday and will feature between 12 and 16 teams. The event is open to the public and Roberson encourages community attendance.

Following the Lakeside meet, the team will participate in the Holiday Classic at Evangel. That meet is set for December 28-29.
