Lakeside pulls out win in fourth quarter, out-scoring Tide 17-8
Minden and Lakeside renewed their inter-parish basketball rivalry Tuesday night in Sibley, and after a back-and-forth game the Warriors came out on top, 61-54.
"It was a good game, a good rivalry game," Lakeside head coach Jason Gould said. "We had a good crowd, and obviously it was good for us to get that first win and get that zero off our record."
Minden head coach Alan Shaw was pleased with his team and the way they played.
"The kids played very hard and I was proud of their effort," he said. "But we just didn't look in sync just yet. I think we're still feeling our way through this and looking for the right combinations. We still have some growing to do and I think we'll get a lot better the more we play."
The teams were tied 16-16 at the end of the first quarter and the Tide led 34-32 at the half and 46-44 at the end of three. The Warriors then out-scored the Tide 17-8 in the final quarter to pull out the win.
"It was a close game all the way," Gould said. "The fourth quarter was big for us."
Both coaches said the game was a series of runs, with Lakeside being able to make the last run stick.
"It was back and forth all the way," Shaw said. "Lakeside made a couple of runs that cost us. We just quit scoring in the late third and through the fourth quarter. We couldn't make a basket or get in sync offensively."
"It was a game of runs," Gould said. "We got on them and then they got on us. In the second quarter, even though they only out-scored us by two, we had made a run and built up an 11-point lead. But they made a push to re-take the lead and led at halftime."
Gould said the Warriors made some key defensive adjustments heading into the fourth quarter that made the difference.
"We made some adjustments and seemed to bother them some," he said. "And then we were able to score and pull away."
T.J. Carpenter led Lakeside with 27 points and eight rebounds. Taurus Erving added 12 points.
Dominique Walker led the Tide with 14 points and D.J. Wallace had 10.
Both teams evened their record to 1-1 on the year.
