Thursday is National Day of Prayer

Throughout the six decades since Congress established an annual National Day of Prayer, millions of Americans have come together every year to express humble reliance upon the Almighty.

On Thursday, May 5, citizens will once again gather stateside and at points around the globe to lift our nation and leaders before the Lord.

prayerIn doing so, we pay tribute to the example set by our Founding Fathers and by presidents down through the years who have exhorted the American people to seek God's help and deliverance during trying times.

As Abraham Lincoln presided over a war-torn land, he called on his fellow citizens to take part in a day of fasting and prayer stating: "It is the duty of nations as well as men to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon, and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history: that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord."

This year, First Baptist Church of Minden at 301 Pennsylvania Avenue is hosting a non-denominational, city-wide NDP service Thursday, May 5 at noon.

Special music will be performed by the FBC Senior Adult Choir, and a time of prayer for our world, our nation, our state and Minden will follow.

At the conclusion of the time of prayer, the public is invited to a complimentary light lunch and time of fellowship in the church reception room.

Joni Eareckson Tada, the 2011 Honorary Chairman of the NDP, speaks his word to us "Neither political nor partisan, the National Day of Prayer is a solemn occasion to seek the favor of Almighty God on behalf of the United States of America."

We invite you to set aside one hour on May 5 and join our city in petition, supplication and praise for God's unspeakable goodness.
