Apaches to host Riverdale tonight at 7 p.m.
The Glenbrook Apaches will be the first Webster Parish high school football team to open their regular season when they kick it off against the Riverdale Rebels.
The MAIS schools kick off two weeks before the LHSAA schools and Glenbrook head coach Ryan Porter laughed as he responded to the question of if he was ready to start the season.
"I don't have much choice no, do I?," he said. "I think the kids are going to be ready, we just have to zone in on what we need to do."
Porter said the jamboree last week gave him an idea on what the team needed to work on this week.
"That game was crucial for us," he said. "It showed us our strengths and weaknesses. It showed us where we needed to tweak things for this week."
The jamboree also let Porter get a look at this week's opponents, the Riverdale Rebels.
"We watched them in the jamboree and on film," Porter said. "We're not sure if their starting quarterback will be playing or not, but we'll assume that he will. Without him they will run the ball a little more. If he plays, I'd expect them to try to throw the ball more. They have a good running back and offensive line, and the tough thing about them is that they have separate offensive and defensive teams. So they have numbers can hurt us, so we'll have to come out and play our best from the first play."
Porter said the team practice well and despite a few bumps and bruises, the team is ready.
"Everything is going good," he said. "I think the kids' spirits are high and they're excited. They're ready to kick the season off. We just have to focus in on our responsibilities. We hope to have a big crowd out there Friday night, because I know the kids would love to play in front of a big crowd."
Game time is 7 p.m.
