Soto, Lewis and Landers lead Warriors at LSU

BATON ROUGE — Members of the Lakeside track team took a step toward the Indoor State Championship by their performances at the LSU Qualifier on January 26. To qualify, a runner has to have one of the 14 top times in his/her event in Division II (AAA, AA, A, B, & C) in the 5 Louisiana Indoors meets contested in January and February.

Enrique Soto ran a 4:39 in the 1600 which is the 2nd place position in Division II.

Soto last season won the State Indoor 1600 setting a Division II record of 4:27. Soto has also qualified for the 3200 with a Division leading 9:57.6 which he ran at the McNeese Indoor Meet. Soto won the State Indoor 3200 Championship in Division II in his freshman season.

In the most anticipated event of the qualifier, it was Chris Lewis vs. Jeryl Brazil in the 55 meter Dash. Last season Lewis won the qualifier championship while Brazil, a LSU football & track commit, won the division II championship run. In the preliminaries, Lewis and Brazil breezed to easy victories in 6.48 and 6.28. In the finals Lewis and Brazil were neck and neck with Brazil outleaning Lewis at the finish line. Brazil finished at 6.30 and Lewis at 6.31. Brazil's 6.28 in the preliminaries ties him for No. 1 in the nation while Lewis' personal best equal of 6.31 puts him third in the US. As a freshman, Lewis ranked 11th in the US and as a sophomore he ranked ninth.

Eric Greene ran a 5:07 in the 1600 which ranks 10th in Division II. Greene also ran an 11:08 in the 3200 at McNeese, which ranks 8th in Division II.

Alissa Landers cruised to a personal best indoor time of 5:52.9 in the 1600. This time ranks fifth in Division II. Landers as a seventh grader last year finished sixth in the State Indoor 3200 with a time of 12:48.

Coaches Dan Grantham and David Kidd will lead the state qualifiers to the State Indoor Meet on Febuary 23 at the Carl Maddox Indoor Track Facility on the LSU campus.
