Drivers aid in arrest

Concerned drivers and several phone calls have led to the arrest of a north Webster man.

Webster Parish Sheriff Gary Sexton said deputies Ricky Corke and Ronald Leonard arrested Darnel Harris, 58, for driving while intoxicated, open container and careless operation of a motor vehicle.

darnel_harris“Our office received several calls about a tan Ford Explorer driving carelessly on Highway 371,” Sexton said. “As Dep. Leonard was approaching the vehicle, it turned into the Short Stop at  Highway 371 and Highway 2 in Sarepta.”

Sexton said as Dep. Corke arrived at the scene, Harris exited his vehicle.

“Dep. Corke described Harris as having ‘red, bloodshot, squinty eyes,’” Sexton said. “He was unsteady on his feet, and there was a strong smell of alcoholic beverage.”

Harris was asked for his license and insurance, and he reportedly “staggered back to his vehicle” to retrieve his insurance information.

“From the driver’s side, a bottle of whiskey was visible on the floorboard,” the sheriff said. “Harris tried to hide it under the seat.”

Sexton said Dep. Corke gave Harris a standard field sobriety test, and he reportedly performed poorly.

“The subject was taken into custody and advised of his rights,” Sexton said. “He was offered the Intoxilyzer 5000, but he wouldn’t give a proper sample. He was transported to the sheriff’s substation, booked and transported to Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center on bonds totaling $1,450.
