Funeral services for the Rev. Milton Vernon Sargent, 81, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at Central Baptist Church in Springhill, where he was an active and faithful member. The Rev. Tim Everett will officiate the service. Burial, with military graveside rites by the Barksdale AFB Honor Guard, will be in the Bethsaida Cemetery, near Ida, under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. today (Tuesday), at Bailey Funeral Home.
Rev. Sargent, a resident of this area since 1994, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, June 11, 2011 in Shreveport. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1968, at the rank of Master Sergeant, after 20 years of service. A commanding officer once described Milton as "the finest NCO that I have known in the 16 years that I have been associated with the Air Force."
He was in the ministry for 40 years, having served as pastor at Ida Baptist Church; Salem Baptist Church of Red Land, First Baptist Church of Columbia, First Baptist Church of Cullen and also served churches in Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia and New Jersey. He was the youngest of seven children, all boys, born to James Henry and Linna May Powell Sargent.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Marjorie Blackerby Sargent; daughters, Tricia Scribner and husband, Randy of Charlotte, North Carolina; Lynna Rea Winkler and husband, Todd of Welcome, Arkansas; six grandchildren, Neli Scribner, Sara Kell and husband, Andrew, Emily Scribner, Jessica McDaniel and husband, Justin, Ashleigh Moreno and husband, Jeremy and Ben Winkler; five great-grandchildren, Noah, May, Nathan, Hunter and Ally; and many precious nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers will be Todd Winkler, Randy Scribner, Ben Winkler, Jeremy Moreno, Justin McDaniel and Ronnie Dupree.
