A passion for dancing

A passion for dance is being shared at Fanci Feet Studio, which is located in Minden City Art Works as part of the City of Minden's Recreational Arts program.

"Dancing is something I have a passion for and have since I was little," said Macey Colvin, dance instructor of Fanci Feet. "There are kids out there that have something to express and need a way to do that. Dancing allows them to do that.

"I've always been told if I was active in something, and kept busy, then I wouldn't get into trouble," she continued. "Every style of dance has a different emotion behind it, so it gives them an opportunity to express themselves in their own way."

As a resident artist at City Art Works, Macey uses her talent to help promote downtown development and tourism in Minden.

"There is everything here in the City Art Works building from dance to stained art, music, fine arts painting – just everything," Macey said. "In exchange for our being provided a studio to work in free of charge, we help out with events and activities on Main Street."

Fanci Feet has performed at Fasching the past two years, at Main to Main, Christmas at the Arbor, at local pageants and other places in and near Minden.

"We are getting ready to hold a show at the studio for the friends and families of our students," said Macey, who knows the importance of family support.

"My grandmother (Ejay Colvin) started teaching when she was 16, and I started taking from her when I was two," Macey continued. "So dance was something that was instilled in me at a very young age. I grew up doing it."

Ejay Colvin began teaching in her teens in Springhill, where she was born and raised, as well as guiding dancers in places across Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas.

Following in Ejay's footsteps, Macey, who is 17, started teaching while she is in high school.

"I'm homeschooled, so it gives me something to work on other than school work," said Macey, who leans on her grandmother for support. "She has been my backbone through it all. She is solid as a rock.

"She is always close by and helps me as far as choreographing and guiding the girls," Macey continued. "She has done it for so long, she can teach in ways that I sometimes can't. She might have a way of explaining it better than I do to someone who is having trouble understanding."

Macey is trained strongly in clogging, but her other disciplines include jazz, hip hop, ballet, tap and lyrical, which are all taught at Fanci Feet.

She offers classes to ages three and up. Elementary classes start at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Kinder Dance is held at 5:30 and from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Macey teaches a junior high and high school group.

An adult class is also being planned and will be held on Thursday nights.

Classes are $15 per month per student, but next dance season, which runs from September to May, the cost will go up to $20.
