Mrs. Evelyn Scott-Lewis, one of eight siblings, was born into the union of her parents, Mr. Dallas Scott and Mrs. Mellie Scott (both deceased) July 16, 1911 in Homer, Claiborne Parish. She shared 99 years of life with honor and grace, having received abundant blessings and eternal rest from Jesus Christ, our Savior, on Sept. 7, 2010.
Mrs. Lewis accepted Christ as her Savior and united with Mount Olive Baptist Church, where she attended faithfully until personal and family illness limited her active participation. Although the church of her membership was Mount Olive Baptist Church, she also attended and participated in the activities of several other community churches.
Mrs. Lewis' public school education dates back to the one-room school of Claiborne Parish, continuing at Webster High School of Webster Parish. Her employment took her into the homes of many public officials and other public servants, many whose lives were greatly impacted because of her strong work ethics and her profound mentoring nature. Her sense of character and integrity was exemplified not only on the job, but also in her home. She was a genuinely devoted, kind, loving, patient, caring wife and mother whose life was centered around her parents, siblings, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Her family was her life, and for periods of time in the lives of her parents, many nieces, nephews and other relatives, she served as caregiver and parent in her home.
Mrs. Evelyn Lewis was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Bob Lewis, who preceded her in death in 1933. To their union were born 12 children, six sons and six daughters. Preceding her in death were one daughter (identity unknown) and three sons, Billy Stevenson, Bennie Stevenson and Olester Stephens.
Mrs. Lewis leaves to cherish her memory her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, siblings and other relatives; daughters, Mrs. Mattie Lewis-Cobb of Urbana, Illinois, Mrs. Catherine Scott of Minden, Mrs. Martha Lynch of Shreveport, Mrs. Lorene Bell of Pooler, Georgia, Dr. Ruby Lewis of Minden; sons, Dr. Bobby Joe Lewis of Hertford North Carolina, Mr. Melvin Lewis of Minden, Mr. Henry Lewis of Minden; sister, Mrs. Mary Smith of Richmond, California; and brother, Mr. Clifton Scott of Plaquemine.
