Participant sign-up passes 470

The annual Minden St. Jude 5k/10k race has accepted more than 470 registered participants and is hoping to reach a goal of 600 for this year's race.

"Because our race has grown so much, we were informed by Sportspectrum's race coordinator that we will be chip timed," said Jennifer Thomas, race chairperson. "They now chip time all races with more than 300 participants."

'Chip timing' uses a computer chip that attaches to the racer's shoe to provide a more accurate method of timing.

"So, don't forget your race number on race day if you pick up your packet early and want to be chip timed," Thomas said. "As you start the race you will pass over a mat that registers that you started the race.

"As you cross the finish line, the chip registers that you finished," Thomas continued. "This provides a more accurate time since not everyone can be in the front when the race starts. There will be someone at the finish line to remove this chip from your shoe."

Registration is now $25, with all proceeds being donated to St. Jude.

Applications can be picked up at Al-N-Way Cleaners through Friday. Last minute applications will be accepted at the Minden Civic Center before the race beings Friday night and from 5 until 8 a.m. Saturday. Online registration is also available at sportspectrumusa.com

"Everyone that registered early will be guaranteed to receive an official race t-shirt in their size," said Jennifer Thomas. "We have ordered extra shirts but cannot guarantee if you register this week and on race day that you will get the shirt size you want.

In its fifth year, the race will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, at the Minden Civic Center. Race options include 5K or 10K, and walkers are encouraged to participate in the cause.

Overall male and female winners for the 5K and 10K will receive $100 and a medal for first place, $50 and a medal for 2nd place and $25 and a medal for 3rd place.

"All the money we receive from race applications goes directly to St. Jude," Thomas said. "Our race sponsors make donations that pay for the event and are showcased on the back of our official race shirt. We raised $14,000 last year and we continue to grow each year."
