Traffic stop nets Minden man

A routine traffic stop turned into the felony arrest of a Minden man early Monday.

Minden Police officers Ryan Barnette and Chris Hammontree arrested James Bell, Jr., 19, of the 16,000 block of U.S. Highway 80 in Minden and charged him with felony possession of CDS Sch. I (marijuana).

“Officer Barnette observed Bell’s maroon Chevy Tahoe traveling on East Street, and then stopped him on Sheppard Street  for improper lane usage,” said Minden Police Chief Steve Cropper. “He recognized the subject from prior arrests.”

Barnette reportedly asked for back-up, and when Officer Hammontree arrived to assist, Cropper said they asked the driver – Bell – to exit the vehicle.

“They did a pat-down for illegal weapons and then asked him if there was anything illegal in the vehicle,” Cropper said. “Bell told them ‘no.’ They asked permission to search the vehicle and it was granted.”

There were reportedly three passengers in the vehicle, so once they exited, officers searched the Tahoe and located one gram of CDS Sch. I (marijuana).

“Bell had a prior arrest for possession of marijuana, so a second arrest constitutes a felony,” Cropper said. “The other occupants of the vehicle were allowed to leave.”

Bell was booked at the Minden Police Department and transferred to Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center.
