September: A Season of Prayer

For students, September means a new school year is under way. For sports fans, September heralds in another season of football and other sporting opportunities. For the Intercessory Prayer Ministry of the First Baptist Church, September welcomes a season of prayer.

Intercessory Prayer Ministry Month will be held September 2 through the 23, with special focus on prayer. This year's theme is "America... Bless God," based on Psalm 34:1, "I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall be continually in my mouth."

Each Sunday in September will feature a special message on prayer and special testimonies from members of the Intercessory Prayer Ministry. Sunday, September 23, at 6 p.m., a church-wide Prayer Ministry Banquet will be held in the gym. On September 30, the FBC church family will begin 40 Days of Prayer for our nation.

Leland Crawford, Pastor of FBC Minden, says "It is an election year, and I encourage all churches in the community to join us in this special time of praying for our nation." 40 Days of Prayer will conclude with a 24 hour prayer vigil November 2.

The Intercessory Prayer Ministry began in 1991, under the leadership of Roberta Kitchens, and has since grown to over 300 men and women (Prayer Warriors) coming into the church's Prayer Room and praying for the needs of others.

Within the Prayer Room, seven prayer stations list hundreds of current requests, including Crisis, General Needs, Deacons, College Students, the Unsaved, Expectant parents, the Homebound, Missions, and Social Issues. A team of Prayer Captains help to keep things organized and up to date.

There is always much excitement and thanksgiving when praise reports are listed in the Prayer Room. According to Mrs. Kitchens, "Our goal is to have someone present in the Prayer Room 24/7. What a privilege it is to pray."

If you have a prayer need please call 371-PRAY. All requests are strictly confidential.

Two other entities within the Prayer Ministry are the Homebound Prayer Ministry and E-Prayer. The Homebound Prayer Ministry sends an updated prayer request sheet weekly to those prayer warriors who can no longer get to the Prayer Room and wish to still be a part of the prayer ministry. Kay Dillon heads up this ministry and can be contacted through the church office.

E-Prayer is a crisis email prayer ministry. Crisis prayer requests are e-mailed to nearly 100 prayer warriors as soon as possible. Everyone is invited to participate in this year's Intercessory Prayer Ministry Month. In January, PRAYER LIFE – a 13 week study will be held on Sunday evenings at 4:30 in conference room E208. Graydon and Roberta Kitchens will be facilitators for this course of study. For more information about PRAYER LIFE or the Intercessory Prayer Ministry please call the church office at 377-4434.
