Plans are under way and participation is being sought for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration and parade.
"Each year, the nation pauses to commemorate the life and legacy of an international hero, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.," said Councilwoman Fayrine A. Kennon-Gilbert, Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration committee chairperson.
"All citizens of Minden, black and white, all denominations, faith-based organizations, civic and social groups and businesses are invited and encouraged to participate and re-commit our community to the ideals of Dr. King."
While the official holiday for this celebration is the third Monday in January each year, several events span three days leading up to the annual MLK Parade in Minden.
"This year will mark our 26th annual observance in Minden," Kennon-Gilbert said. "We want this milestone celebration to be memorable and have chosen 'Living United: One Dream, One Purpose' as our theme for the 2013 MLK celebration."
The activity line-up for the MLK celebration is as follows:
Saturday, January 19 – A 'Three on Three' Basketball Tournament will take place at the Minden Recreational Complex at 1 p.m., followed by the Oratorical Contest at 5 p.m. at the Minden Civic Center.
Sunday, January 20 – A Commemorative Service will be held at the Minden Civic Center at 3 p.m., where MLK Youth Leadership Awards will be presented.
Monday, January 21 – The Minister's Ecumenical March will take off at 8 a.m. on MLK Drive, followed by the MLK Parade, which rolls at 10 a.m. in downtown Minden.
A competition for the parade's best decorated float, best band performance and most spirited group/organization will be awarded immediately after the parade at the Minden Civic Center along with the Youth Rally, Essay and Poster Contest winners.
MLK Celebration commemorative tee-shirts and sweatshirts are available.
