Because of lack of trust in God and a rebellious spirit towards Him, the Israelites had wandered forty years in the wilderness. They were now once again on the borders of the Promised Land. Moses was dead. Joshua, his long time faithful companion, was commissioned of God "now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel" Joshua 1:2.
