High school students interested in learning about health careers can gain hands-on experience through national award winning AHEC of a Summer program.
The program is offered in 21 parishes in north Louisiana and sponsored by the North Louisiana Area Health Education Center (AHEC).
Students who participate volunteer at a local health care facility and rotate through different areas during the 15-day program. Students also participate in workshops provided by area medical organizations and take field trips to other health care facilities and universities in North Louisiana.
The goal of the program is to connect students to careers.
The program provides students a greater understanding of health careers and education resources, while providing a fun and memorable experience, thus coining the name "AHEC of a Summer." Students who successfully complete the program earn up to 100 community service hours on their transcript and a half unit of elective credit, while also earning their CPR certification.
AHEC of a Summer is celebrating its 23rd year in North Louisiana. More than 500 students in North Louisiana apply anually.
The program is free and is an extensive collaboration sponsored by North Louisiana AHEC, 29 health care training facilities and 87 partner organizations, including school boards, schools, state agencies and medical facilities.
Applications are available from high school counselors and on the website at www.nlahec.org. The deadline is March 1, 2013.
The North Louisiana AHEC mission is to increase access to and quality of health resources to rural and underserved communities in north Louisiana. AHECs work to improve health care workforce resources by connecting students to careers; professionals to communities; and communities to better health.
Recently, the AHEC of a Summer program received a national award of excellence in Las Vegas, Nevada.
