22nd Annual GB&T Minden Holiday Classic gets underway

The Minden Lady Tiders opened up their portion of the Minden Holiday Classic with a 57-46 over Ringgold Wednesday night.

"I thought we played pretty well," Lady Tider head coach Jacob Brown said. "It was nice to get back in the win column. We're doing a better job of being patient and getting good looks. I'm also proud of the way we've been shooting free throws lately. We were 13 of 17 last night. It was a much better effort and the girls played hard the whole game."

The Lady Tiders led Ringgold 9-6 at the end of the first quarter and 28-18 at the half.

"We played real good defense in the first quarter and held them to just six points," Brown said. "But offensively, we had some opportunities to score more and extend our lead, but we didn't."

The Lady Tiders heated up in the second quarter.

"We kind of turned it up a bit after the first quarter," Brown said. "We'd built a big lead and then Ringgold would hit a big shot. But we out-scored them 19-12 in the quarter to take 10-point lead into halftime."

The Lady Tiders took the third quarter, 11-9, and Ringgold took the fourth, 19-18, to make the final 57-46.

"Through out the whole game I challenged the team to pick up their intensity," Brown said. "Ringgold hit some tough shots where we had them defended, but you just have to take your hats off to them. Ringgold came to play."

Carmella Specks led the Lady Tiders with 18 points and five rebounds and JaCourtney Neloms added 14 points. Anatvia Sterling scored nine, Metosha Gill 11 and Shabrie Nelson added five points and five rebounds. Tyia Green added four rebounds.

"It was a nice win for us, it moves us to 8-4," Brown said. "Next, we'll play Lakeview Friday night at 7 p.m. Our guys should be playing at 8:30 p.m. so we hope our fans will come out and hopefully watch us play back-to-back."
