Salvation: Part Three

We know that Jesus saved us from our sins by His death on the cross, but though other good people have died martyr's deaths, none of them could save us from our sins. What made Jesus' death effective?

Jesus saves us by who He is –the only one who could reveal the true character of God and the only One who can give life because He is the Creator God. John 1:1-4 states "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life." In Hebrews 1:1-3 we read "God, . . .Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high."

Jesus saves us by what He has accomplished for us in the past. He became a man and lived for us. "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation . . . and was made in the likeness of men" Philippians 2:5-7. He died our death for sin. "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin" 2 Corinthians 5:21. His resurrection makes ours possible. "For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection" Romans 6:5. We were given the gift of enmity (hatred) against sin. (See Genesis 3:15)

Jesus saves us by what He is doing for us now. He gives us His Spirit. "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter . . . even the Spirit of truth" John 14:16, 17. He further tells us "A new heart also will I give you" Ezekiel 36:26. That new heart causes us to long for more likeness to Him. "He hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness" Isaiah 61:10. Right now He is serving as our "High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people" Hebrews 2:17.

Finally, Jesus saves us by what He will do for us in the future. Jesus is coming again! "I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also" John 14:2, 3. Praise the Lord!!
