District A Minden City Councilman Joe Cornelius was arrested by Minden Police early Thursday following an altercation with his stepdaughter.
According to police reports, Cornelius was charged with driving while intoxicated, two counts of domestic battery and one count of aggravated assault.
Minden Police Chief Steve Cropper said during the late hours of July 4 and early morning of July 5, Cornelius fought with his stepdaughter.
"Apparently there had been some problems between his daughter and stepdaughter," Cropper said. "Cornelius took his daughter away from the house and when he came home, the argument continued with his stepdaughter. She ended up with some marks on her neck."
Cropper said when the stepdaughter called the police, Cornelius left the residence.
"Officers had a description of his vehicle, and stopped him on Talton Street."
Cornelius has served as District A councilman since January. Prior to that time, he served District B in the 1990s.
Phone calls to Cornelius requesting comments were not returned.
According to RS 14:98 and RS 14:37, all of Cornelius' charges are considered misdemeanors, which according to the state Constitution do not affect his ability to hold public office.Subscribe to Read!
