Police put brakes on cocaine carrier

Kenneth_Ray_MitchellA police officer, who stopped a vehicle short on brake lights, arrested a Minden man for possession of crack cocaine, proving there is no such thing as a "routine" traffic stop.

Kenneth Mitchell, 45, was arrested for possession of CDS Sch. II (crack cocaine), possession of drug paraphernalia, open container and misrepresentation during booking.

According to Minden police reports, Ofc. Chris Hammontree was patrolling Bayou Avenue when he stopped a vehicle with two burned out brake lights.

Mitchell was identified as a passenger in the vehicle.

Hammontree reportedly approached the vehicle, talking to Mitchell, who allegedly answered in "slurred speech" and smelled of "alcoholic impurities."

The officer located two open beer containers on the floorboard.

He also reported seeing a cold, half-full, opened beer, a small red baggie with two rocks of suspected crack cocaine and a crack pipe.

The driver of the vehicle was not cited.
