"You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder, and whoever murders will be subject to judgment. But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment." Matthew 5:21-22a HCSB
In the remainder of chapter 5, Jesus contrasts six statements based on Old Testament law with six contrasting statements that show the true requirements for righteous kingdom living.
To be righteous, the law required a person to do or not do certain actions, but Jesus says that true righteousness begins with the motive of the heart. He emphasizes that righteousness goes beyond the action to the attitude (the motive), beyond the conduct to the character (the heart). To follow Christ means a change of heart and attitude that leads to action.
Lord Jesus, change my heart to one that is filled with Your love and grace. Let my lifestyle exhibit my desire to live for You and to bring You glory and honor.
